Kenyan President William Ruto has joined other heads of state in Arusha Tanzania for the 24th EAC Heads of State Summit. The meeting will focus on strengthening East Africa’s economic and political unity.
Among the topics to be discussed during the two day meeting include creating a sustainable financial plan and drafting a constitution for a Political Confederation. The latter may see a full political federation. The eight EAC member countries seek to come up with a sustainable financial plan.
The summit will further discuss security issues, updates on projects like the East African Railway Master Plan and North Corridor that are both important for boosting growth and regional connectivity.
President Ruto will also join leaders such as Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud , Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi.
The EaC marks it 25th year anniversary since its inception in 1999. It has seen growth into a vital economic bloc with more than 170 million people. The decisions that will be made during this year’s summit are likely to influence the future of the commission and its role with African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA).
