President William Ruto announced that his administration will decide whether to designate the Hindu festival Diwali as a public holiday in 2025.

As Ruto contemplates, the atheists in Kenya are also demanding a public holiday.

In a statement, the Atheists in Kenya Society said they will submit a petition to Parliament on Friday, November 1, 2024, asking for the establishment of a national holiday for atheists.

The society’s president, Harrison Mumia, said the holiday will celebrate individuals who have rejected religious beliefs in favor of humanism, secularism, and free thought.

"This initiative aligns with Article 27 of the 2010 Constitution, which asserts that the state shall not discriminate against any individual on various grounds, including religion, conscience, and belief," said Mumia.

The society said they will move to court if their petition is rejected.
