Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) are currently in Kisii to investigate the cause of a mysterious disease outbreak that has led to the hospitalization of over 200 individuals.
WHO representatives confirmed that their team is in South Mugirango, Kisii County, to assess local laboratory capabilities, assist lab technicians in identifying the disease, and strengthen coordination and response efforts for the ongoing outbreak.
“WHO is on the ground in South Mugirango, Kisii County, working to identify the cause of the unknown disease outbreak,” the organization said in a statement.
“Key activities include assessing laboratory capacity, supporting laboratory officers in disease identification, and boosting coordination and response efforts. Investigations are still underway.”
The Ministry of Health had previously dispatched a team of experts to probe the cause of the illness. Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni confirmed that the disease has affected three villages in South Mugirango, impacting more than 200 people.
Muthoni stated that the investigative team is collaborating with local health officials to analyze samples collected from the affected area in order to determine the specific nature of the disease.
Those admitted to hospitals have reported symptoms such as severe diarrhea with bloody stools, fever, and intense headaches.
