The African film is mourning the loss of veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who has died at the age of 84.
His family announced his death on social media on Wednesday, describing him as the “Lion of Lufodo.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs,” the family said in a statement.
Olu Jacobs’ career began in the 1970s at a British television network before he started his film career in the 1980s. He drew on extensive stage experience portraying his diverse characters in both Nigerian and British entertainment.
His appearances in countless films, often portrayed father figures, leaders and men of wisdom; his ability to embody authority while maintaining warmth made him a household name across Africa.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before being featured in “The Professionals” and “The Dogs of War.”
Olu Jacobs married his fellow Nollywood actress Joke Silva, with whom he had three children. Together, they became mentors to young actors and actresses in Nigeria while advocating for the growth of the Nigerian film industry.
The family has appealed for privacy as they mourn, calling on social media influencers to respect their wishes during this difficult time.
