Police on Tuesday issued a stern warning against a planned protest at the official residence of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in Karen, Nairobi, saying the demonstration will not be allowed to proceed.
The planned procession, organized by the Farmers Party, was scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, following the controversial impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Anti-riot police were deployed along major routes leading to the DP’s residence and at key entry points in the capital, tasked with intercepting any suspicious vehicles or motorcycles.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah said the protest poses a potential threat to security and will not be permitted near the Deputy President’s official premises.
“They should keep off for now,” Sedah stated, reinforcing the security position taken by law enforcement.
The Farmers Party, led by Irungu Nyakera, had shared a letter on X (formerly Twitter), purportedly notifying authorities of the planned peaceful procession.
According to the party, the demonstration was meant to symbolically reinstall Rigathi Gachagua as the Deputy President designate, citing a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal that the party interprets as favoring Gachagua’s return.
“Following the ruling of the Court of Appeal on the removal from office of H.E. Rigathi Gachagua… we, the party and members of the public, will be holding a peaceful procession… to reinstall Rigathi Gachagua,” the letter by Farmers Party Executive Director George Wakibi Njogu stated.
