University learning has been stalled for the second consecutive week as lecturers and staff have been holding out on returning to work until their 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is fully implemented by the government.
University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary General Dr. Constantine Wasonga, in Nairobi on Wednesday, said the threatened vice chancellors’ issuing of disciplinary action against non-compliant striking lecturers was a “plot” and “mischief.” He reiterated that the industrial action was going to be maintained up to the point when the government honored its part of the deal.
Moreover, the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) Secretary General, Charles Mukhwaya, joined hands with Dr. Wasonga in taking the same stand. He accused the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of giving false information to the public about the amount of money that the staff is owed.
The deadlock has affected students who are unable to leave the university, and there is still a possibility that the academic calendar will be affected if the conflict continues.
