Potential nurses in Turkana County and refugees in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps are poised to further their careers thanks to a new scholarship initiative launched by the Lodwar Campus of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).
In partnership with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and Turkana County Government, KMTC offers fully sponsored scholarships in a two-year Upgrading Diploma in Community Health Nursing by Distance Learning, commencing in September 2025.
This is only open to Turkana County residents and Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugees. The aim is to develop local health capability by educating nurses who already possess basic qualifications and are already employed in the field.
This program is a step towards empowering the Turkana communities and refugee camps with the required skills to achieve improved health outcomes at the local levels,” KMTC said in its Monday release.
To be considered for the scholarship, the following should be in place:
Have a Certificate in Community Health Nursing
Have at least two years of working experience
Be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya
Awardees will enroll in their studies at KMTC Lodwar Campus, where they will have all their tuition fees covered by the UNHCR. This is an excellent chance for community health workers who often serve in hard-to-reach or underserved areas—to obtain a diploma and enhance their knowledge and skills as they continue to serve their communities.
Application Deadline: October 9, 2025
Eligible candidates are to submit their applications via the KMTC online platform on or before October 9, 2025. Local candidates are to provide an introduction letter from the chief of area, while refugee candidates are to provide a UNHCR manager or officer letter.
