Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to becoming a leading destination for wellness tourism, citing yoga as a key cultural and health bridge that aligns with the country’s development agenda.
Speaking during the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations held at the Sikh Union Club in Nairobi, Miano emphasized the transformative power of yoga and its relevance to Kenya’s goals of universal healthcare, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation.
The event, themed “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” brought together yoga enthusiasts, health advocates, and diplomatic representatives to promote yoga’s contribution to both personal wellbeing and planetary health.
The day also coincided with the summer solstice traditionally a time of renewal and spiritual awakening, adding symbolic significance to the celebrations.“Yoga teaches us to live consciously in how we move, eat, and relate to one another and the Earth,” said Miano. “It offers a holistic, accessible, and cost-effective path to healing and resilience.”
Miano further outlined her ministry’s efforts to integrate yoga into Kenya’s experiential and sustainable tourism offerings, leveraging the country’s natural beauty and rich cultural tapestry to attract global wellness seekers.“Our scenic landscapes, peaceful beaches, serene highlands, and vibrant cultural heritage make Kenya an ideal destination for yoga retreats and wellness experiences,” she stated.
She called for a broader approach to wellness that extends beyond physical exercise, urging Kenyans and tourists alike to embrace mindfulness as a way to nurture both individual health and the environment.“We must go beyond the mat. When we care for ourselves, we care for the Earth.” She said
Under Miano’s leadership, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is actively positioning yoga and wellness tourism as key pillars in Kenya’s travel sector, aiming to diversify the industry while promoting sustainable practices that benefit communities and nature alike.
