Tanzanian singer Nandy has found herself at the center of discipline after the National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA) fined her Tsh 3 million (Ksh 147,000).
The penalty was issued following her performance at the Miss Universe Tanzania 2026 final, where the council deemed her outfit “indecent dressing.”
Nandy appeared on stage in a striking, form-fitting outfit with intricate patterns and a flowing cape. The design drew admiration from fans for its artistry and boldness, but BASATA ruled the attire as violating the standards of decency for public performances.
The council’s decision its ongoing role in regulating artistic expression in Tanzania, particularly around issues of morality and cultural presentation.
The singer admitted the offense, deleting the video footage of the performance from her digital media platforms and promptly paying the penalty.
On the other hand, BASATA confirmed that she is permitted to continue with her music and artistic activities but under the council supervision.
Despite the controversy, Nandy remains one of Tanzania’s most influential voices in music, with her ability to balance compliance with regulators while maintaining her creative edge.
Some fans supported BASATA while others criticized the fine given to Nandy.
