A multi-agency security operation in Kondele, Kisumu County, has led to the arrest of a suspected criminal gang member and the recovery of weapons, cannabis sativa, government stores and tactical equipment.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Administration Police Service (APS) and General Service Unit (GSU) intercepted a white Toyota Axio, registration KCZ 808K, and arrested 34-year-old Franklin Okungu, alias “Ninjaman.”
Police said Okungu is believed to be associated with Oliver Jaoko, alias “Olivetti,” and subsequently led officers to his residence in Manyatta, where a search was conducted.
Recovered items included arrows, three machetes, a customised club, military-pattern ground sheets, tactical clothing, a red beret and a military-style helmet.
Officers also recovered cannabis sativa, 16 cannabis-infused cookies, a diary containing alleged combat tactics, training manuals and other warfare-related materials.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Okungu was an instructor within an outfit known as “American Marines,” allegedly training youths in combat techniques, including karate and the use of machetes and swords.
Police said the group later evolved into the “Summit Gang.”
Okungu is being processed for arraignment and is expected to face charges including robbery with violence, possession of public stores, narcotics offences and participation in organised criminal activity.
Police have urged the public to share information to help disrupt criminal gangs.
