Peter Mwangi Wamiti, the suspect in the killing of Karatina businessman George Gathu, will remain in police custody for an additional seven days as investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) continue.
Nyeri Senior Resident Magistrate Mary Gituma approved the prosecution’s request for more time, despite opposition from the suspect’s lawyer, Juma Kendo. Kendo argued that the initial 14 days granted for investigations were sufficient and opposed extending it further.
The prosecution explained to the court that the extra time is necessary to allow the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to review evidence and determine the appropriate charges against the suspect. They also informed the court that the firearm allegedly used in the shooting was handed over to IPOA on Tuesday for ballistic examination.
Additionally, IPOA has yet to record a formal statement from Peter Mwangi Wamiti, which is critical to the ongoing investigations.
The case is set to be mentioned again on February 9, when the court will decide whether the suspect will enter a plea. Investigators say they are working to ensure all necessary evidence is properly gathered before proceeding to trial.
