State Takes Charge of 15,000-Seater Mombasa Stadium Project

After an agreement between the national government and Mombasa county, the formal will take over the construction of the 15,000-seater Mombasa Municipal Stadium.

Sports Permanent Secretary Elijah Mwangi held extensive deliberations with Mombasa Governor HE Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir on modalities of how the national government through the Ministry of Creative Economy, Youth Affairs and Sports and Ministry of Defense will take over this critical project.

Mwangi was accompanied by Defence Permanent Secretary Patrick Mariru.

The meeting resolved the County Government will receive the project’s final accounts to ascertain the cost of and scoop of works done within a week paving way for national government’s entry.

“Owing to the quality of workmanship and strategic location, the Mombasa Stadium, once compete, will aptly qualify to be an alternative venue for hosting AFCON matches in 2027” Mwangi said.

Adding that the Sports’ Ministry will propose the stadium as a suitable venue to Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspection team.

This stadium, already 40 percent complete, will have a FIFA-standard football pitch, a canopy, modern terraces, VIP pavilion and other critical amenities for a facility that can host international sports tournament.

This stadium will take a maximum of one year to complete.
