The Social Health Authority (SHA) is set to launch on October 1, with more than one million Kenyans already registered under the new health scheme.
The Ministry of Health reports that the rollout process is 98% complete, with only final touches remaining before Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa encourages Kenyans to finalize their registration.
“Over 1.2 million people have voluntarily registered. Please ensure you complete your registration before visiting healthcare facilities. SHA will transition current NHIF members to the new system, making it crucial to finalize your registration,” Dr. Barasa stated during the training of master trainers at the Kenya School of Government (KSG).
According to SHA Acting Chief Executive Officer Elijah Wachira, “A total of 7,876 healthcare providers have been empaneled through the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in preparation for the SHA rollout.”

Dr. Barasa emphasized that the ongoing training aims to equip healthcare workers with the necessary skills for the new system, enhancing operational efficiency and patient outcomes. “This training will ensure nationwide coverage, improve healthcare delivery, and strengthen health financing systems,” she said.
To address potential fraud and enhance system efficiency, the government has heavily invested in a comprehensive and integrated digital system.
“The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Council of Governors and a Safaricom-led consortium, has developed a robust system for SHA registration, connecting all health facilities and agencies through what we call the ‘Digital Health Superhighway,’” Dr. Barasa explained.
The training involves about 100 master trainers, including 80 from the former NHIF, 10 from the Ministry of Health, and others from partner organizations.
These trainers will oversee the deployment of the SHA Health Provider Portal and replace the NHIF claims management system.
Dr. Barasa emphasized the importance of a smooth transition for NHIF staff, ensuring adherence to legal and procedural guidelines.
Starting October 1, Kenyans will no longer access healthcare services under NHIF as the new SHA scheme takes effect.
