Six of a pride of lions at Oleisukut Conservancy in the Maasai Mara were brought in for poisoning, days after the government launched free entry into national parks to commemorate World Tourism Day on September 27.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) says the lions were noticed to be behaving unusually by rangers who called for a veterinary team. The lions received emergency treatment before they were moved to a safe place.
Four of the lions have recovered fully so far while two are being closely monitored.
Luckily, all six were rescued. Our veterinary staff acted fast, stabilized the pride and relocated them,” KWS said in a statement, while saying the investigations are ongoing to establish what caused the poisoning.
The incident has once again brought into the limelight the threats facing Kenya’s wildlife despite efforts by the authorities to promote conservation and tourism.
