The Kenya Sevens team, Shujaa, stormed into the HSBC Singapore Sevens Cup semi-finals, finishing at the top of Pool B after impressive 17-7 and 10-7 victories over Ireland and France, respectively.
Shujaa kicked off their campaign in the first match of the men’s competition against Ireland.
The team quickly took control with an early try and conversion by Nygel Amaitsa, putting them 7-0 up within the first two minutes.
Kevin Wekesa then added another try in the sixth minute, extending the lead to 12-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Patrick Odongo crossed the try line in the 12th minute, bringing the score to 17-0.
Ireland responded with a try from Josh Costello, converted by Mark Roche, but the match ended 17-7 in favor of Shujaa.
Shujaa’s second pool match saw them face the Olympic gold medallists, France. The team struck first, with Vincent Onyala slicing through the French defense in the third minute.
Nygel Amaitsa’s successful conversion gave Shujaa a 7-0 lead at halftime.
France came out strong after the break, leveling the score at 7-7 through a try by Quere Kabaka and a conversion from Enahemo Artaud.
With time winding down, Shujaa won a penalty 40 meters out, right in front of the posts.

Amaitsa calmly slotted the kick, securing a 10-7 victory and Shujaa’s first semi-final berth since returning to the World Series for the 2024/25 season.
Shujaa’s semi-final opponent will be determined later after the final round of pool games.
The first Cup semi-final is scheduled for 9:34 AM on Sunday, 6th April, 2025.
