The Senate Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources has criticized the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) for occupying a contested piece of land in Kisii County, following a petition by local residents who claim rightful ownership of the property.

Led by nominated Senator Karen Nyamu, the committee visited the site on a fact-finding mission to assess the situation firsthand. The residents allege that KALRO abandoned its original land in Sotik, Bomet County, and unlawfully relocated to the disputed parcel in Kisii.“We urge the National Land Commission to urgently intervene and provide a lasting resolution to this matter,” said Senator Nyamu during the visit.

The aggrieved community members maintain that they hold ancestral rights to the land and accuse KALRO of encroachment without proper consultation or compensation.

Senator Joe Nyutu, also a member of the committee, reassured the petitioners of the Senate’s commitment to addressing their grievances. “We take this issue seriously and will work towards ensuring justice is served,” he said.

The committee is expected to compile a report and recommend appropriate action to resolve the land dispute in accordance with the law.The National Land Commission has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
