Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru claimed victory at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday morning, clocking 2:21:05 to edge out a competitive field in a tightly contested women’s race.
The 2015 African Games silver medalist held off a strong Ethiopian challenge, with Dera Dida finishing second in 2:21:08 and Azmera Gebru taking third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru was making her third appearance of the season, following a fifth-place finish at the Tokyo Marathon in March (2:19:57) and a 10th-place result at May’s Great Manchester Run (10km), where she clocked 33:14.
The 30-year-old returned to Berlin with unfinished business, having finished runner-up in the 2022 edition with a personal best of 2:18:00. Her victory this time confirms her status as one of the leading contenders in women’s marathon running.
