President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Professor Bethwell Ogot, a distinguished historian whose contributions to Kenya’s intellectual and academic landscape are widely revered.
In a statement released on Thursay on his social media , President Ruto described Prof. Ogot’s passing as the end of a “long and illustrious life of selfless service, inspired leadership, and committed professionalism.”
The President lauded Prof. Ogot for his unwavering dedication to his work as a historian.
“Prof Ogot pursued his vocation with peerless rigor, bringing history to life and advancing an intellectual agenda that was both devoutly patriotic and proudly African,” President Ruto said. “Through his scholarly talent, he corrected the impacts of Euro-centric ideologies, shaping the nation’s academic consciousness.”
President Ruto highlighted the broader influence of Prof. Ogot’s leadership, noting that it transcended academia and extended to numerous spheres of public life. “His commitment, compassion, patriotism, rigor, and integrity shone like a lighthouse, guiding many in the academic field and beyond,” he remarked.
The President also acknowledged Prof. Ogot’s significant role as a family man, describing him as a “gentle and wise giant” who not only inspired academic excellence but also motivated his family to achieve greatness, making their home a “unique constellation of great achievers.”
In his conclusion, President Ruto joined the nation in sending heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Prof. Ogot. “May the Almighty God favour you with grace and divine solace,” he said. “Rest in peace, Prof. Ogot.”
