President William Ruto has downplayed claims of rivalry between the State and the Church, urging leaders across Kenya to foster unity for national stability.
Speaking during a Sunday church service in Kajiado County, Ruto addressed mounting criticism over his donations to religious institutions. Critics, including some clergy, have raised ethical questions about these contributions.
“There is no competition between the Church and others, or between the State and the Church,” Ruto asserted. “We are one partner, one country. Let us avoid quarrels and unnecessary conflicts.”
Ruto emphasized the need for collaboration among leaders, irrespective of religious, political, or ethnic affiliations. He called for a collective effort to promote peace and inclusivity in governance.

“We must work together for the greater good of this country we all love—Kenya. No religion, community, or political group will be excluded as we build our nation together,” the President pledged.
However, the call for unity comes amid growing discontent among some clergy members over the government’s leadership. Archbishop Philip Anyolo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi recently rejected a Sh2.6 million donation from President Ruto, citing ethical concerns.
“The Church is called to uphold integrity by refusing contributions that may compromise its independence or facilitate unjust enrichment,” Anyolo remarked.
The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops has also criticized government policies, particularly those on taxation, accusing them of deepening economic hardships.
President Ruto remains resolute, dismissing allegations of divisive leadership while advocating for a united approach between the Church and State. He reiterated his commitment to steering the nation away from exclusionary politics and tribalism.
“We are building a Kenya where every person, regardless of their background or beliefs, feels included and valued,” he said.
Ruto’s remarks highlight the delicate balance between religious institutions and political leadership in Kenya, underscoring the importance of ethical governance and inclusivity.
