Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has secured a new government position after a previous appointment was declared unconstitutional by the courts.
In a gazette notice dated November 15, President William Ruto appointed Kidero as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) for a three-year term.
He replaces Hussein Tene Debasso, whose appointment has been revoked.
Kidero, who has remained largely out of the political spotlight in recent years, was defeated in his bid for re-election as Nairobi governor by Mike Sonko in 2017 and subsequently lost the Homa Bay gubernatorial race in the 2022 elections.

In early 2023, Kidero, along with others, was appointed Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Trade and Industrialization, but the court ruled that the 50 CAS positions were unconstitutional, rendering the appointments null and void.
In addition to Kidero’s appointment, President Ruto also named Thuo Mathenge as chairperson of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and former Kacheliba MP Mark Lomunokol as the chairperson of the Board of Directors of Sports Kenya and others.
Last month, the President appointed Bishop Margaret Wanjiru as chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, with former nominated Senator Millicent Omanga named as a member of the commission.
However, Omanga declined the offer, citing personal reasons for her decision.
