Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said he is ready to deputise Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if the opposition chooses him as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo said he would have no problem supporting a Sifuna-Kalonzo ticket, arguing that the main priority for the opposition should be finding a team capable of defeating President William Ruto in the next election.
Speaking during an interview with NTV on Monday, August 10, the former Vice President said he was open to working with Sifuna or any other opposition leader who emerges as the preferred candidate.
“This time, we are not leaving anything to chance. We have agreed that whatever it takes. Of course, I have no problem at all in supporting Sifuna,” Kalonzo said.
He added that he believed Sifuna would also be willing to support him if the Wiper leader was picked to lead the opposition into the 2027 race.
Kalonzo said his willingness to support Sifuna was not an indication that he had abandoned his own presidential ambitions.
Instead, he maintained that the opposition needed to agree on one candidate rather than splitting votes among several contenders.
“I will support this and the other. I am quite sure, and I can tell you, Sifuna has no problem supporting me either. I have no problem supporting him. I have no problem supporting Gachagua,” he said.
In addition, he mentioned some other opposition figures, such as Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President, Eugene Wamalwa, former Defence Cabinet Secretary, and Martha Karua, former Cabinet Secretary, as leaders with whom he could work.
“It’s not a simple yes, Sifuna or Kalonzo or Gachagua or Eugene Wamalwa or Martha Karua,” he stated.
Sifuna Builds Support
These statements of Kalonzo Musyoka are coming at a time when the popularity of Sifuna continues to grow in the opposition ahead of the elections of 2027.
According to a TIFA opinion poll released on Friday, July 24, Sifuna was leading ODM supporters in terms of preference for their choice of a party’s presidential candidate.
It appeared from the poll that 44 per cent of the ODM supporters preferred Sifuna, whereas 20 per cent would support President Ruto.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i was next with nine per cent, whereas Kalonzo obtained four per cent and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino two per cent of the support.
Sifuna in recent weeks continued his political activism with the holding of rallies and meetings aimed at winning support for his potential presidential campaign.
The senator from Nairobi has also added that the opposition must choose one person to run for president in 2027 to maximize their chances of beating Ruto.
President Ruto continues to be a strong contender in spite of the increased opposition activities since recent opinion polls have continued to show him ahead of some opposition figures.
With the 2027 race taking shape, Kalonzo’s latest remarks could add another layer to the negotiations within the opposition, particularly over who will carry the joint ticket and who will serve as running mate.
