President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to agricultural investment as a strategy to enhance food security and reduce reliance on imports.
Speaking while commissioning the Bura Gravity Canal (Korakora–Nanighi) in Tana River County, the Head of State emphasized that increased agricultural productivity would not only ensure food security but also generate wealth for farmers.
“We have prioritised investment in agriculture to make Kenya food secure and eliminate the shame of hunger in our country. Increased agricultural productivity will also create wealth for our farmers and reduce reliance on imports that strain our foreign exchange reserves,” said Ruto.

The Bura Gravity Canal, an irrigation project, is expected to significantly boost food production by expanding the acreage under irrigation from 6,000 acres to 25,000 acres.

This aligns with the government’s broader food security agenda, aimed at transforming the agricultural sector through large-scale irrigation and modern farming techniques.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to revamp Kenya’s agriculture by investing in infrastructure that enhances productivity, promising continued support to farmers through irrigation schemes, mechanization, and access to quality inputs.
