Health officials in Mwingi West, Kitui County have raised alarm over the increasing number of men testing positive for prostate cancer. During a medical camp organized by the Kitui County Department of Health in collaboration with the African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF), it was revealed that four out of every ten men screened in the area were diagnosed with the disease.

Mwingi West Sub-County Public Health Officer Joseph Kimwele emphasized the importance of early detection, urging men to go for regular screening. He noted that those exhibiting early signs of prostate cancer were being referred to Level 4 hospitals for further treatment and specialized care.“This high prevalence is concerning, and we encourage men to embrace regular check-ups.

Early detection increases the chances of successful treatment and improves survival rates,” said Kimwele.Beneficiaries of the free medical camp expressed gratitude, stating that the initiative had significantly eased their burden, as many previously had to travel long distances for medical assistance.

Health experts emphasized for increased awareness and early screening to combat prostate cancer, which remains one of the leading health threats to men in Kenya. The county government has pledged to organize more outreach programs to ensure residents receive timely medical attention.
