Top military intelligence officials from East African Community (EAC) member states gathered in Nairobi on May 27, 2025, for their annual conference focused on strengthening regional security and intelligence cooperation.
The high-level meeting was officially opened by Kenya’s Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lt. Gen. John Omenda, who urged delegates to engage openly and work together to address shared security challenges.
“We are facing common threats across the EAC terrorism, cross-border crime, insurgencies and we must respond with a united front. This forum is key to finding joint solutions,” said Lt. Gen. Omenda.
Chairing the conference was Kenya’s Director of Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Burje, who emphasized the importance of intelligence-sharing and regional coordination to ensure long-term stability.
Participants from member countries Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo shared updates on national security and discussed coordinated strategies to combat terrorism, illicit trafficking, ethnic conflict, and political violence.
The conference called for stronger capacity-building, improved information sharing, and synchronized responses to emerging threats across the region.
The gathering will conclude with the signing of joint agreements aimed at boosting intelligence collaboration and reinforcing peace and security in the EAC.
