Former Prime Minister and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has clarified that the pact between his party and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will run only until 2027, dismissing claims that it extends beyond the next general elections.
Speaking during an ODM Parliamentary Group meeting in Machakos County on Monday, Raila emphasized that no resolution has been made regarding ODM’s position in the 2027 presidential race.
The meeting brought together ODM Members of Parliament and the party leadership ahead of the ODM@20 celebrations scheduled for October.
“Look at what we have signed, we must remain as ODM. We signed and agreed that we will work together up to 2027,” Raila told the gathering.
He went on to rebuke party members who have been making premature statements on ODM’s future political direction, saying only the party’s official organs are mandated to make such decisions.
“Wherever you are, don’t commit the party to things that have not been discussed. Let them be discussed first,” he said to loud applause from members.
The veteran opposition leader further urged members to rally behind the existing pact with the Kenya Kwanza government while maintaining loyalty to ODM, warning against being swayed by speculative campaigns.
