Patrick Essombe and Alpha Onyango were on target as Gor Mahia advanced to the semi-finals of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup with a 2-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks at Dandora Stadium on Thursday evening.
Essombe opened the scoring with his first goal for K’Ogalo since joining in January. The opportunity came after Samuel Kapen intercepted a misplaced pass in midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted ball through to the Ugandan forward.
Essombe held off his marker with strength before slotting the ball past Sharks goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa.
Despite trailing, William ‘Kanu’ Muluya’s side enjoyed long spells of possession, sticking to their trademark short-passing style.
However, they were undone by wasteful finishing and Gor Mahia’s disciplined defending.
Substitute Alpha Onyango put the game beyond doubt in the 84th minute, just 14 minutes after coming on.
The midfielder’s impact proved decisive, securing Gor Mahia’s place in the final four of the competition.
