Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship, Raila Odinga, has demanded an end to the ongoing abductions in the country.

Speaking at the Bomas of Kenya on Monday during an interdenominational prayer service organized by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Women’s Chapter in his support, Raila called for immediate action from relevant security agencies.

He questioned the authorities’ claim of ignorance regarding the individuals behind the abductions, challenging the police’s statement that they were unaware of those responsible.

“Evil acts happening here must be condemned. I cannot sit back and remain silent in the face of such wrongs. Young people are being abducted, detained, and even killed in our country. We cannot allow this to continue. The people behind these abductions—who are they, if the police say they don’t know them? If the government doesn’t know, what’s the point of having police? We have said that abductions must stop in our country. Let the devil be defeated,” Raila said.

In December 2024, Raila had called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, citing the police’s failure to address the rising cases of abductions.

The former prime minister warned that this disturbing trend could lead to public protests, especially among the youth, and demanded that the Inspector General reveal who is behind the abductions or step down if he is overwhelmed.

Raila also highlighted the distinctive nature of the abductions, noting the use of fake vehicle number plates and handcuffs, which he suggested could indicate involvement from security agencies.
