President William Ruto has reassured Kenyans that his government is committed to improving the lives and working conditions of the country’s police officers.
Speaking at the launch of the National Police and State Department of Correctional Services Strategic Plans 2023-2027 in Nairobi, President Ruto shared plans to provide better resources and support to the police force.
One of the main concerns he addressed was the police uniform. The president promised that the government would work with police officers to design a new uniform that would inspire pride and motivation. “We will consult with the officers to ensure we have the right uniform that makes them feel proud and motivated to do their work,” he said.
In terms of transport, President Ruto acknowledged that many police stations are struggling due to a lack of vehicles. To solve this, the government plans to buy 3,000 vehicles to help police officers move around more easily. He mentioned that 1,000 vehicles would be purchased soon, although the process had faced some delays.
The President also discussed improvements in police housing. Many officers live in poor conditions, but progress is being made. The first 582 housing units have already been completed, and 1,000 more are being built. Additionally, the government plans to build 17,000 new houses for police officers.
“Our goal is to make sure that police officers, who have the important job of keeping us safe, work in conditions that allow them to do their job better,” President Ruto said.
