Police officers in Malaba, Busia County, on Thursday, June 19, intercepted a lorry carrying uncustomed goods during a targeted operation aimed at curbing smuggling activities at the border town.

The lorry, registration number KDD 287U, was flagged down by officers but the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. The vehicle was later towed to Malaba Police Station for further inspection.

A multi-agency team searching the vehicle discovered 32 drums, each believed to contain 250 litres of ethanol, hidden beneath 52.5 sacks of suspected wheat bran.

Both the lorry and the cargo have been detained at the station as investigations continue. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the driver.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on illicit trade and protecting public safety.
