The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, has addressed concerns over the status of a man who was arrested by officers while armed with a gun at the Likoni ferry.
During a press briefing held in Mombasa, Deputy Inspector General of the country’s police service, Gilbert Masengeli revealed that indeed there is truth in the arrest of an individual with a gun. According to the statement, the officers arrested the man, following which he was moved to a health facility.
Upon examination, it came out that the man had mental problems.
Moreover, D.I.G added that the gun spotted in the video that was circulated online is not a real gun.
“The suspect had been taken to hospital, and it turned out from the health practitioners that he was having some psychological problems. It was found out that he was using a fake gun,” Gilbert Masengeli noted.
The man, who appeared to be living on the streets and was dressed in old, worn-out clothes, had tied the fake gun around his waist with a rope. He was also carrying a few other items.
Still, according to the police, they could not afford to take any risks.
“Officers are supposed to ensure security and safety of all individuals. Sometimes things may seem to be harmless at first only to become dangerous later,” Masengeli commented.
Ali Nuno, Coast Regional Police Commander, added that the footage was not a recent development but took place back in October last year contrary to the perception by most people who think it occurred in March.
However, the reaction from the police shows another problem at hand. There have been instances where criminals have used street people to conceal their weapons and commit offenses without arousing any suspicion.
Given this, the police took the matter very seriously despite the condition of the man.
The man is now getting the assistance he requires, while the police remain vigilant as they handle the crime within the coastal area.
