Police in Nairobi County on Thursday night conducted a major crackdown on illicit brews in the Soweto slums, dismantling one of the area’s main chang’aa brewing and distribution dens.
During the operation, officers raided a premise linked to the illegal trade, but the suspected owner, identified as David Nabwana, managed to escape after allegedly inciting residents to cause a commotion.
The chaos reportedly enabled him and others involved to flee the scene.Confirming the incident, Njiru Sub-county Police Commander John Owoth said Nabwana and his wife are notorious figures in the area, well-known for their involvement in the illicit brew business.
He revealed that Nabwana had been arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts twice this year alone, but was released on cash bail on both occasions.”This crackdown is part of our ongoing efforts to stamp out the illegal alcohol trade, which continues to endanger lives and disrupt communities,” Owoth stated.
The police have vowed to intensify operations in informal settlements across Nairobi to curb the brewing and sale of illicit alcohol, which remains a major public health and security concern. Investigations are underway to track down Nabwana and others who escaped during the raid.
