The Party for Democratic Unity (PDU) has announced that it will field a candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, setting the stage for a fierce contest in Embu County.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi Town on Thursday, PDU Party Leader Issaiah Gichu said the decision was reached after wide consultations with grassroots leaders and residents of Mbeere North, who expressed the need for an alternative voice in Parliament.

“We will not sit back and watch from the sidelines. PDU will present a strong candidate who understands the challenges of the people of Mbeere North, especially in areas of agriculture, water, and youth empowerment,” said Gichu.

The by-election, occasioned by the vacancy of the Mbeere North seat, has already attracted interest from major political players, with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and opposition-affiliated parties keen to flex their muscle in the region.

Gichu said PDU’s entry into the race was not merely symbolic but a demonstration of the party’s growing influence in Mount Kenya East politics.

“This is the beginning of a broader strategy as we head toward 2027. Mbeere North will be a litmus test of how ready Kenyans are for new leadership that is people-centered,” he added.

Political analysts say the Mbeere North by-election could serve as a rehearsal for bigger political battles in 2027, with heavyweights from Mount Kenya already positioning their parties to gain ground.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced September 27th for the by election.
