Clerk of the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge has assured Parliamentary staff of their safety as they resume duty this week.
This comes in the wake of a chaotic incident where Parliament Buildings were raided and partially set ablaze.
Njoroge emphasized that ensuring security and safety at the workplace is a top priority. “Your security and safety at the workplace remain a key priority in these plans,” he stated.
He called on public servants to rely on their resilience, impartiality, professionalism, and solidarity to rebuild and continue serving the Nation with excellence.
“As public servants, let us lean on our usual resilience, impartiality, professionalism, and solidarity to enable us to rebuild and continue serving the Nation and our institution with excellence,” Njoroge added.
Njoroge expressed his gratitude to the staff for their unwavering commitment and dedication to public service as they resumed their duties on Monday. He particularly thanked them for their swift response during the Occupy Parliament protest on June 25, 2024.
“I wish to sincerely thank all of you for your selfless conduct and swift response to safeguard the safety and well-being of Members of Parliament, visitors, and yourselves during the unprecedented and unfortunate events that occurred in the Institution of Parliament on Tuesday, June 25, 2024,” Njoroge said. “Your bravery in the face of challenge and adversity is truly commendable.”
He singled out officers from the Directorate of Sergeant-at-Arms, the Directorate of Security and Safety Services, and the Department of Hospitality Services, along with other security officers deployed to Parliament. These teams facilitated the evacuation of Members, visitors, and staff from the Main Parliament Building to safety.
Njoroge expressed gratitude that there were no fatalities and no severe injuries to Members of Parliament, visitors, or staff during the incident. “We are indeed grateful to God for protecting all of us in that difficult moment,” he said.
Acknowledging the trauma left by the events of June 25, 2024, Njoroge urged staff to maintain a spirit of fellowship and care for one another. “As we move forward from that unfortunate episode, I urge us to retain and enhance our spirit of fellowship and caring for each other,” he said.
“Let us build a better and stronger foundation for the future of the institution of Parliament as we continue serving our beloved Nation and fulfilling the call to continually facilitate Members of Parliament to discharge their constitutional mandate,” Njoroge concluded.
