President William Ruto has once again defended the government’s Affordable Housing Programme, arguing that critics have failed to provide viable alternatives to address Kenya’s housing shortage and unemployment challenges.
Speaking on Monday during his development tour of Nakuru County, the President accused opposition leaders of criticizing the housing initiative without offering practical solutions. He maintained that the programme is creating jobs while enabling ordinary Kenyans to own homes.
“The objective of the Affordable Housing Project is to enable ordinary Kenyans to have an opportunity to become homeowners while creating job opportunities for our young people. Those who criticize it should tell the people of Kenya what else they will do,” Ruto said.
The President said the programme has created employment opportunities for contractors, engineers, architects and other workers in the construction sector, while also boosting demand for locally produced building materials.
Ruto also defended the Affordable Housing Levy, dismissing claims that it has placed an unnecessary burden on workers. He argued that the contributions are an investment that will deliver long-term benefits through home ownership, economic growth and job creation.
He urged Kenyans to remain patient, saying major national development projects often take time before their full benefits are realized.
The President’s remarks come amid sustained criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that the housing levy has increased the financial burden on workers at a time when many households are grappling with the high cost of living and unemployment. Some critics have also raised concerns about transparency and accountability in the management of funds collected through the levy.
Ruto, however, insisted that the government remains committed to the successful implementation of the programme and that the funds are being used for their intended purpose. He called on his political opponents to engage in constructive debate rather than what he described as persistent political attacks.
The President further urged Kenyans to support leaders who prioritize development, saying transformative projects such as the Affordable Housing Programme are essential to the country’s long-term economic growth.
