The Social Protection Committee, chaired by Hon. Alice Ng’ang’a reconvened today amid growing concerns over a financial shortfall that threatens to disrupt the Inua Jamii cash transfer program.

The initiative, which supports the elderly, persons with severe disabilities, and vulnerable households, faces an uncertain future due to budget constraints.

Principal Secretary for Social Protection and Senior Citizens Affairs, Joseph Monari, is expected to shed light on the Ministry’s financial woes after revealing that funds for the program have been depleted. This shortfall raises serious concerns over facilitation between March and July 2025.

Today’s session follows a tense adjournment yesterday, when lawmakers halted Monari’s presentation after discovering discrepancies in the submitted budget policy statement. MPs criticized the inaccuracies, reminding the PS that Parliament operates on precision and accountability, and demanded a revised, error-free submission.

With thousands of Kenyans relying on Inua Jamii for survival, legislators are set to engage the PS to formulate urgent interventions and prevent a crisis that could leave the country’s most vulnerable without support.
