Armed goons suspected to be state agents on Friday disrupted a meeting of National Unity Platform supporters who were planning for the party’s Presidential candidate rally in Kampala, Uganda.

The goons who were armed with crude weapons raided the home of Deusdedit Owora in Bukasa Muyenga East of Kampala and assaulted him together with other NUP supporters who were planning for the party leader Bobi Wine’s rally at Namuwongo Market in Kampala.

According to Owora the armed goons are believed to be state agents who are out to stop popularization of the opposition party.

“The armed goons assaulted us and left me with body injuries and they also destroyed my vehicle which was being branded by my team ahead of the mobilization event in preparation for the opposition’s National Unity Platform rally that was to be held on Sunday,” stated Owora.

The NUP member added that the attackers accused him of financing the opposition party and sponsoring the party’s events with an aim of removing President Yoweri Museveni from power.

“I joined the political party as a member in 2023 and since then I have been an active and loyal member of the party. They also warned me against contributing any money towards National Unity Platform activities,” added Owora.

Robert Kyagulanyi, pop star-turned-politician widely known as Bobi Wine, is making a second bid for the presidency under  the NUP party, challenging longtime leader Yoweri Museveni in a contest that has seen him repeatedly arrested and detained for opposing the incumbent’s rule.

Uganda will hold it’s general elections on January 15 next year.
