More than 3,000 people have been displaced after River Sabwani burst its banks following days of heavy rainfall in Kapomboi Ward, Trans Nzoia County. The flooding has wreaked havoc in Namanjalala, Soy Mining, Kapsitwet, and Marinda villages, leaving homes and farms submerged.

According to Kwanza Sub County Administrator Charles Yabuna, the situation remains dire and could worsen if evacuations are not intensified.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, but without rapid evacuation and coordinated rescue efforts, more families could be at risk,” Yabuna warned.

The floods have also disrupted learning in six schools that were marooned by rising waters, forcing hundreds of learners to stay at home.

Frustrated residents have blamed the government for failing to complete the construction of dykes along River Sabwani, a project launched in 2017 — saying the delay has exposed them to recurrent flooding and massive losses.

Local leaders are now appealing to the Kenya Red Cross and the County Government of Trans Nzoia to establish an emergency command centre to coordinate rescue, relief distribution, and temporary shelter for affected families.

The heavy rains, which continue to pound the region, have raised concerns about the county’s preparedness for disaster management as fears of further flooding persist.
