Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has announced the formation of a Presidential Exploratory Committee, a move aimed at assessing the viability of his bid for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
In a statement made on Saturday, Omtatah emphasized that the committee would play a crucial role in determining the feasibility of his presidential aspirations.
“We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and the call to serve has never been more urgent. After careful consultations with trusted advisors, community leaders, and citizens, I am pleased to announce the formation of this committee,” Omtatah said.
The committee, whose membership was published in the Friday Kenya Gazette, is tasked with conducting opinion polls and surveys to assess Omtatah’s popularity, name recognition, and electability.
Additionally, the team will evaluate the political landscape, including the strengths of potential opponents, and analyze regional and demographic political trends, as well as public sentiment on key national issues.
The team will also focus on developing an initial campaign strategy, including the drafting of a campaign roadmap that outlines potential alliances, timelines, and resource requirements.
“The committee will also assess our ability to raise campaign funds, create a fundraising strategy, and ensure compliance with Kenyan electoral finance regulations,” Omtatah’s Gazette notice stated.
The six-member team will be led by Mary Kathomi Riungu, with Charles Ile Kabaiku serving as deputy chairperson.
David John Bwakali will take on the role of political and grassroots strategist.
The committee’s tenure is expected to last for up to 18 months and will be dissolved once Omtatah officially announces his candidacy or decides not to run.
Omtatah, a first-time senator, is widely known for his activism and legal battles against government policies that he views as oppressive or unconstitutional. He joined politics in 2022 as an independent candidate.
