Njoro Girls Senior School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely following unrest after the death of a Form Four student, Brenda Akinyi.
Tension rose on Monday as parents and residents staged protests outside the school, demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the 18-year-old’s death. Police moved in to disperse the crowds, leading to a brief standoff as emotions ran high.
Brenda died at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at school. Her family has accused the institution of negligence, claiming she did not receive timely medical attention and that they were not informed early enough about her condition.
Her brother, Allan Otieno, alleged Brenda had been unwell for several days and was only given painkillers. The family says they live nearby and could have intervened sooner if they had been contacted in time.
However, the Nakuru County Director of Education dismissed claims of negligence, saying preliminary records indicate Brenda had a history of illness and that investigations will follow due process.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to establish the cause of death as investigations continue.
