The Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was on Wednesday introduced in the National Assembly, marking a significant step towards enhancing the protection and rights of victims of sexual offences.

The Bill underwent its first reading in the National Assembly Chamber.

The proposed amendment aims to revise the Sexual Offences Act, 2006, with several key updates designed to strengthen public awareness and support for victims.

One of the central features of the Bill is the introduction of Clause 7, which seeks to add a new section, 46A, dedicated to the promotion of national public awareness about sexual offences.
In addition to raising awareness, the Bill places a mandate on the Cabinet Secretary responsible for education to develop and implement programs aimed at safeguarding, protecting, and promoting the right to education for victims of sexual offences.

This includes addressing the needs of victims of teenage pregnancies, ensuring they receive the necessary support and educational opportunities.
