Key leaders of Kenya’s National Assembly gathered in Nakuru today for a three-day annual retreat aimed at reinforcing collaboration and setting legislative priorities.

The retreat, themed “Re-invigorating Synergy in Leadership for Accelerated Discharge of the Mandate of the National Assembly,” is a mid-term self-assessment, designed to enhance strategic legislative performance as the Assembly approaches its fourth session.

Deputy Clerk Mrs. Serah M. Kioko emphasized the retreat’s timing, noting that the mid-term offers a critical opportunity for reflection and recalibration.

“The trends across jurisdictions demonstrate that the mid-term of a Parliament is a ripe moment for self-assessment,” said Mrs. Kioko, adding that the retreat seeks to build on last year’s foundational efforts in aligning leadership to the National Assembly’s legislative agenda.

Among the participants are Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula, Deputy Speaker Hon. Gladys J. Boss, Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, and Minority Leader Hon. Junet Mohamed.

The retreat will feature sessions on strengthening oversight and legislative efficiency, including discussions on energy security with the Ministry of Energy, represented by Cabinet Secretary Hon. Opiyo Wandayi and Principal Secretary Mr. Alex Kamau Wachira.

Speaker Wetang’ula will host a National Assembly Speaker’s Round Table with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) under the topic, “Drivers of Competitiveness,” focusing on aligning legislative efforts with private sector goals to bolster Kenya’s economy.

The retreat also seeks to address procedural challenges and foster improved teamwork within the National Assembly’s House Business Committee, which has faced significant legislative challenges in recent sessions, including judicial rulings and public protests against the Finance Bill in June 2024. Reflecting on these events, Mrs. Kioko highlighted the importance of building resilience and refining parliamentary strategies.

Key discussions will include “Securing the Energy Sector for Sustainable Development,” presented by Mr. Alex Kamau Wachira, and “Effectively Marshaling and Supporting House Business,” led by Hon. Moses Cheboi, former Deputy Speaker.

The retreat is expected to yield actionable strategies for advancing legislative business, enhancing committee oversight, and addressing procedural issues.
