Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims that he is angling for a Cabinet Secretary position in President William Ruto’s government, insisting his focus remains on serving the people who elected him.
Speaking on Tuesday after hosting Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Natembeya described the meeting as routine and rooted strictly in official protocol.
“I have no interest in joining the Kenya Kwanza government in any capacity,” the governor said. “I’m an elected leader with a mandate to serve the people of Trans Nzoia. What would a CS post add? I’ve worked in government before. My energy is fully directed toward my county.”
His remarks came amid growing speculation that he might be warming up to the ruling coalition after photos of him warmly receiving Murkomen went viral. The two known to have differing political ideology opinions conducted sessions at CS’s trip to Trans Nzoia for the 22nd issue of the Jukwaa La Usalama grassroots interaction forum.
The meeting generated a stir on social media, with some individuals speculating that Natembeya is positioning himself for appointment in the national government-or maybe even jumping ship to another political platform.
But the governor was quick to dispel those rumor
“When a senior government official visits a county, it’s standard protocol for them to pay a courtesy call to the Governor’s Office. That’s what happened here. Nothing more,” Natembeya explained.
He reasserted his stand on the opposition and indicated that he was not going to leave behind the role of holding the government accountable.
“As leaders of the opposition, we receive criticism, intimidation, and a lot of challenges. But that doesn’t mean we run away. My duty is to represent my people and speak the truth to power,” he added.
While on visit, CS Murkomen walked through a number of government buildings and spoke with county security officers. He also reviewed citizen registration services in the ACC Central Division of Saboti Sub-County.
He was accompanied by top security chiefs, including Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, and Regional APS Commander John Amadadi.
The meeting with Governor Natembeya came just days after the governor resumed duties at his Kitale office on July 21, following a two-month court-imposed restriction that had barred him from accessing the premises.
