Police in Narok have arrested one suspect following a harrowing attack on a young pregnant woman who was assaulted by four men using sticks in Enkareta, Narok County.
A video of the attack, which circulated on the internet, sparked a nationwide outrage. Police say the woman, identified as Lepeita, was assaulted by her own brothers for going against the family’s choice on who she should marry.
The men, police reports say, demanded that she should marry another man the family had chosen for her, but she refused and chose a partner of her choice.
Narok Central OCPD John Momanyi said security officers moved fast once the incident was reported.
“When we received the information, we worked together with the local administrators, like the chief and the DCC, and were able to track where the victim was taken. We urge the public to always give such information to authorities so that justice can be served,” he said.
Narok County Government Head of Communication Julius Kuyioni also condemned the attack.
“We thank the County Commissioner and all security agencies who swung into action. We urge them to keep the pace until justice is delivered. Her screams should not be in vain,” he said.
The victim was being treated at Narok Referral Hospital as police were still looking for the other suspects.
Lepeita is punched over and over again in the video while her mother pleads with the men to let her be, but they ignore her requests.
