Nairobi residents could soon pay an extra charge on their monthly water bills as the county government plans to introduce a new conservancy fee to fund waste management services.

Governor Johnson Sakaja announced the proposal, saying the fee will help the county deal with persistent garbage collection challenges across the city. He explained that the funds will be used to repair and purchase garbage trucks, improve waste collection systems, and strengthen environmental management in residential and commercial areas.

According to the governor, the conservancy levy previously existed but was removed, leaving solid waste management largely underfunded. By including the fee in water bills, the county hopes to create a reliable and sustainable way for residents to contribute to keeping the city clean.

However, the move has sparked mixed reactions among Nairobians. Many residents are already burdened by the high cost of living and worry that the new charge will further increase their monthly expenses. Some have questioned whether the county will deliver better services in return for the additional fee.
