The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) recorded a major milestone in August 2026 after its market capitalisation climbed to approximately KSh4.17 trillion, reflecting a strong recovery in the value of listed companies.

The growth was highlighted in the World Bank’s November 2026 Kenya Economic Update, which pointed to improved performance in the country’s financial markets.

Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that the NSE’s market capitalisation stood at KSh4.218 trillion at the end of August, up from KSh3.992 trillion in July.

The increase represented a gain of about KSh226 billion in one month, signalling a strong rally in share prices across the market.

The milestone followed a period of increased investor activity, with major listed companies recording gains that lifted the overall value of the exchange.

Banking, energy and insurance stocks were among the key drivers of the rally. The listing of Kenya Pipeline Company and Family Bank also expanded investment opportunities and added value to the market.

In August, the NSE All Share Index (NASI), which tracks the performance of listed companies, rose to 251 points from 238 points in July. The NSE 20 Share Index also increased from 4,094 to 4,326 points during the same period.

The exchange had crossed the KSh4 trillion mark for the first time earlier in August, with NSE Chief Executive Officer Frank Mwiti describing the achievement as a new chapter for Kenya’s capital markets.

The milestone came as the exchange pursued efforts to attract more companies, deepen investor participation and introduce new investment products.

The World Bank also reported that foreign direct investment inflows into Kenya increased by 170.5 per cent to a record KSh355 billion (US$2.74 billion) in the 12 months to September 2026, pointing to improved investor interest in the country.

However, market capitalisation represents the combined market value of listed companies based on their share prices. It does not mean that the exchange or the government received KSh4.17 trillion in cash.

The latest performance provides a positive signal for Kenya’s capital markets, although share prices remain subject to market conditions and can rise or fall depending on investor sentiment.
