The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will be established to enhance public order, protect businesses and critical installations, and improve traffic management across Nairobi and its surrounding areas.


Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration said the operationalisation of the unit is progressing after receiving an update from the technical team tasked with developing its framework.


The team, which is finalising the operational structures for the new unit, has incorporated international best practices from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan.


According to CS Murkomen, the unit will place strong emphasis on community participation and the use of technology to strengthen crime prevention, detection, and response mechanisms within the capital city.


“The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will maintain public order, safeguard businesses and critical installations, and improve traffic flow across the city and its environs,” Murkomen said.


The operationalisation process brings together security agencies and government stakeholders to develop a coordinated approach to policing and urban safety challenges in Nairobi.


The meeting was attended by Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, National Government Coordination Principal Secretary Ahmed Abdisalan Ibrahim, Inspector General of Police , and DCI Director .


Also present were Deputy Inspector Generals Eliud Lagat of the Kenya Police Service and Gilbert Masengeli of the Administration Police Service, Principal Administrative Secretary Beverly Opwora, and Nairobi City County Head of Law Enforcement and Inspectorate Services Eva Wangechi, alongside other stakeholders.


The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is expected to strengthen coordination among security agencies while addressing emerging urban security and mobility challenges within the metropolitan area.
