The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned that parts of Nairobi and neighbouring counties are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.

In a weather advisory issued on Thursday, March 12, Kenya Met said the rainfall is expected between 9:00 a.m. Thursday and 9:00 a.m. Friday, affecting several areas within the Nairobi Metropolitan region.

“Moderate to heavy rainfall expected in parts of Nairobi and surrounding counties over the next 24 hours (09:00 today – 09:00 tomorrow),” the department said in part of its forecast.

The weather agency noted that isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in several parts of the country, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley region, the Southeastern Lowlands and the Coast.

According to Kenya Met, counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley; including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi, are expected to experience cloudy mornings accompanied by light rain before sunny intervals later in the day.

The department said afternoon showers could develop in some areas and occasionally spread to several places, while nights are likely to remain partly cloudy with chances of isolated rainfall.

A similar weather pattern is expected in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, covering counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot.

Other counties likely to experience showers and thunderstorms include Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Narok, where morning rains in a few areas may be followed by afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with occasional night rainfall.

In North-Western Kenya, particularly Turkana and Samburu counties, residents are expected to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night, although occasional rainfall may occur in a few areas.

Kenya Met urged residents in the affected regions to remain alert and monitor weather updates as rainfall continues to affect several parts of the country.
