The Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) paid a glowing tribute to late Dr. Phoebe Asiyo, who died on the 17th of this month aged 93.
The late Dr. Phoebe Asiyo has been eulogized as a courageous leader who championed women’s rights and pushed for their inclusion at decision-making tables.
Speakers at a memorial service in her honour held in Nairobi, women leaders described her as a trailblazer who paved the way for a new generation to challenge the status quo.
Speaking during the event in Nairobi, MYWO Chairperson Rahab Muiu described the late Dr. Asiyo as a courageous leader whose advocacy opened doors for the women.“She was our first African president of Maendeleo ya Wanawake.
A role she pursued with passion because she believed only an African woman could tell our story authentically,” Mrs. Muiu recalled. “She reminded us constantly that unity among women is non-negotiable. Even in her final call to me in April, she insisted that Maendeleo must remain united in service.”
Sentiments echoed by MP Kabondo Kasipul Eve Obara who underscored the significance of protecting the gains women have made in politics and leadership.
The women leaders said time had for a dedicated area to be set up within the city for a monument to honour women who have made great contributions to the fabric of this nation.
