Muslim leaders have reminded politicians of their lack of morality when they focus on divisive things while they should be the ones embracing unity as they warned that the ongoing political tensions among politicians are working against national unity and development.

The religious leaders who were speaking at a press briefing in commemoration of the holy month of Ramadhan encouraged politicians instead of pushing their own partisan self, interests to preach peace, tolerance, and togetherness. They noted that this sacred period is an opportunity for individuals to look back, reconcile and make a new pledge for working together for a united and prosperous nation.

The Muslim leaders observed that worsening political hostility is causing unnecessary divisions among communities, whereas, the country at the moment needs people to work together to solve the socio, economic problems which are very urgent and massive.

They have issued their statement when a humanitarian crisis is setting in Turkana County owing to prolonged drought that has resulted in more than 350, 000 households being on the edge of the disaster. The vast and arid region continues to experience severe water shortages and dwindling food supplies, which is making the vulnerable families suffer even more.

Children are the most vulnerable among the affected ones, with several parts of the county registering more cases of malnutrition. The local dispensaries and health centers are overburdened as more patients with hunger, related diseases keep coming for medical care.

The Kenya Red Cross Society has issued a warning that if immediate interventions are not carried out in the next few days, a humanitarian catastrophe of unimaginable proportions may be unavoidable. The society demands instant assistance to supply food, hygienic water, and medical care to the affected people.

According to humanitarian agencies, only through the combined and well, coordinated efforts of both the national and county government, development partners, and relief organizations can the situation be prevented from deteriorating further.

In the light of Ramadhan, the religious leaders through their words are making an appeal to both the leaders and the people to come together in pity and love. They further stress that it is only through their unity and by the decisive actions that the drought crisis can be resolved and the lives of the vulnerable communities can be secured.
