Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has sounded the alarm over the resurgence of criminal gangs in parts of Central Kenya, warning that political influence is shielding the groups as they terrorise and business owners.
Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama security consultative forum in Kiambu on Monday, Murkomen said the gangs have re-emerged with renewed confidence, engaging in extortion, harassment, and aligning with politicians for protection.“These criminal gangs are thriving because of political influence. They are extorting locals and seeking cover from politicians; they will not be spared,” said the CS.
Murkomen warned that the government will launch a targeted crackdown on gang leaders, insisting it will no longer be “business as usual” for those destabilising. He linked the groups to recent demonstrations, saying they were being mobilised by chaos.“This is a serious concern. The organised groups are the ones who led demonstrations and are mobilised. We are going to be firm in arresting and prosecuting,” he added.
The CS appealed to the judiciary and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to remain firm in handling such cases to ensure justice and strengthen law enforcement efforts.
Murkomen also raised concerns about the influx of foreigners, particularly in Kiambu County, who are reportedly engaging in illegal activities in collaboration with the gangs.
He vowed that such individuals would be deported.“We will deport such people back to their own countries. The resurgence of these gangs in counties could compromise national security, especially in the slums,” he warned.The CS further touched on the issue of land fraud, noting that the Ministry of Lands is actively working to address the problem and provide lasting solutions.
Murkomen emphasised that the fight against organised crime requires collective effort, promising that arrests will be made and suspects charged, as the government intensifies its war against criminal gangs across the country.
